Vocational Training:

The ultimate objective of SSS is the rehabilitation of mentally challenged. And the first step towards this, after special education is pre- vocational training. This training period is utilized in developing different concepts. These are like color concept, weight concept, concept of cooperation, quality concept etc. During this period different skills are also identified and developed. These skills could be like holding, moving, twisting, removing, assembling, nailing, needle threading, sieving, folding etc.

Even though a particular student might look physically normal, he may not be able to do above mentioned act successfully. It is not sufficient to do the action correctly, but it is equally important that it is being done consistently with same degree of accuracy. In most of the cases they cannot take more than two step commands. It therefore becomes very important to arrange activity which can be finished in one or two steps.

After this pre-vocational training, these students go to vocational training. From here onwards rehabilitation professional takes over. Here they get hands on training and opportunity to try whatever they have learnt during pre-vocational stage. In this section actual work is done. Like screen printing, file making, rakhi making, greeting cards, garlands and different articles from artificial flowers etc. They work on sewing machine. They work on handloom. They make envelops, paper bags etc. They spin amber charkha also. In fact they can do many more things. Many of them work in agriculture field also.

It is the rehabilitation worker’s responsibility to identify the exact ability of the student and match it with the actual work or vocation. We thus prefer calling them “differently able” rather than disabled. This is the most crucial and important step in the process of rehabilitation or we can call it as the foundation.
